Yeah, I generally like Cornell's writing, but he is a Christian and while he seems to write perfectly good theist characters in other faiths as well, I think he just can't make that step to "no faith". To be fair, I'm an atheist and I have a lot of trouble imagining what it would be like to have faith, so I just don't write about that part of characters' lives. I appreciate that Cornell tried but you're very right that he failed.
