I'm not a fan of beer, but I've never had the root beer. I'll give it a shot. :D I've never heard of a Malibu Bay Breeze before, though. :O

If the place isn't crowded, definitely ask the bartender what their specialty is. One bar we go to a lot will make sangria for my mom in either red or white.

If you have free time during the week, the bars are usually less crowded Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday so it's a good time to experiment with drinks.

Monday and Wednesday nights might work; first class isn't until late the next day, though I'd have to see if a friend would go with me. |D

FYI, Not Your Father's Root Beer IS a beer. It tastes like root beer with a strong beer (hops/malt flavor) aftertaste. I like root beer and I like beer okay, but I strongly did not like the two flavors together. Beer flavor + sweet is not my thing.

I second the various recommendations of ciders; they're fairly popular right now and most bars will have at least one kind. Angry Orchard is a very common one throughout the US; also Woodchuck. Wider's ciders are very nice quality, especially their perry (pear cider), which is very smooth.

Oh, drat, I was hoping that it was just alcoholic root bear, not beer-root beer. IF that distinction makes any sense lmao.

YMMV for how beer-tasting you find it. My friends liked it well enough; they also used it in floats (too sweet for me). For my money I'd rather just use goood craft root beer as a mixer with dark rum or vodka. A vanilla vodka would probably be nice.

Incidentally, there is a cocktail called the Root Beer, but it does not contain root beer. It's 2oz vodka, 6oz cola, 1oz Galliano; over ice.
