I understand why these laws exist--I mean, of course I do--but the situation OP is describing is either the perfect use of the law or a really gross one, depending on if this woman had her stepchildren (and/or biochild?) before or after she adopted and/or released custody of her adopted kid.

She and her first husband adopted him, and she sent him back at some point fairly soon after she married her second husband (the one with the four stepchildren). All this within the space of about a year.
