I get that. Anyway you can maybe get brief naptime somewhere else in the day?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I get you OP, because I did/do the same thing. But it really would be better if you got a full night's sleep, make sure you're eating right, and set aside some time for mild exercise during the day. Escapism is helpful for stress, but in moderation... and NOT at the expense of healthier, more effective coping mechanisms.

That's very understandable. It's good that you recognize, even though it's an activity you enjoy, that it's causing you harm. Could you possibly set an alarm at a set time each night and stick to it? (Or multiple alarms, if need be, like you're in the middle of a chapter and you just cannot bear to go to sleep right then.)

yeah sometimes i feel like fanfic is an addiction, if i start reading something before bed i just. cannot. stop. it'll keep me up way later than i want.

Yup. I've gotten better about it in recent years, but yup. I find myself doing it a lot when I have something really important to do the next day, too, so it really is something of a pacifier to relieve my stress. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can take a toll on your health. Good luck finding a balance!

This is something I like to do as well but I give myself a set-time to stop reading so I don't stay up too long, it's easy to loose track otherwise.

This is something I try not to do, but end up doing anyway. Not ALL the time, but I've read (Or gamed) three, four hours after I should've gone to bed. Sometimes it's just difficult to step away when you're having fun, especially if you know once you've gone to bed you'll wake up to something boring or stressful.

But since it's hurting your health, maybe you should consider some alarms, and make a point of trying to follow them. (I have one at 9, and another at 12. I'm almost always in bed by 12 these days, but when I'm not...well, I tend to go, “Well, shit," and stop what I'm doing. Being at least somewhat well rested is worth it, imo.)

Please consider printing out your fanfic collection. The light of your e-reader is interfering with your sleep wake cycle. If you have a "no electronic stuff in my face" rule for one hour before bedtime, you will fare much better in the sleep department.

Some ereaders don't emit any light. Mine doesn't.

Wear glasses that block blue light.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone reading their fic on a phone or tablet should consider the Twilight app or something similar. You can set various filters on your device to filter out the blue light.

That same sort of thing is what has led to my very variable sleep pattern. I stay up late at night reading or playing a game, and each night it gets pushed back further until I'm totally nocturnal, then it will keep being pushed back until I'm totally daylight again.

Though because I'm on a pension I don't have work that keeps it in check or it otherwise strains, though at the time I did have a job... yeah, it strained it.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-01-12 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, the sleep pattern thing is so true.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's good that you realize it's getting in the way, but for your own health, it's probably best to stick to a proper bedtime.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same exact thing. I am super stressed in general, to the point where I am going to change my schedule this year because I can't handle this much all at once. Fanfic and fanart, tv shows, etc are the worst because it keeps me up late at night. But like you, I wish I could extend the days so that I'd have more time to do fun things.

Yeah I feel the same sometimes

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-01-12 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing that helps me is when a fic is so good that I don't want to spoil an expierence by being bitter about staying up because of it. Helps put it down sometimes.

you are not alone
