I actually think her voice is really good when it comes to raw talent, but it frustrates me that no one seems to want to correct her, at least on the '21' album (which is admittedly the only one I've heard). There's times where her voice almost cracks, or doesn't seem to quite reach the note she was going for. I've had people insist to me 'that's just what it sounds like when you're putting emotion into the song' but to me, it sounds like someone with a lot of talent who was never taught to properly use it.

She developed nodes on her vocal cords that had to be removed. That right there is concrete evidence she's doing it wrong.

DA

Ooh. Has she had formal training at all?

Sorry, but I think there are some voices where, when people say they sound terrible, they are simply wrong. A voice might be slightly to taste, but vocal ability is not all that subjective. So yeah, you're wrong about her voice.

Are her songs repetitive in topic? That I can agree with. I heard she actually wrote a full album about having kids and such, but thought no one would be interested so scrapped it. Like it or not, songs about love and broken hearts/break-ups sell.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Technically, she can sing, yes. "I hate the way her voice sounds" is an opinion, and therefore isn't "wrong" because it can't be proven one way or the other.

She's not a great singer in terms of vocal ability, though. She's a decent singer and I like her voice a lot, but she doesn't exactly have exceptional range or exceptional vocal ability (for a professional singer, that is, obviously she can sing better than most people, but not better than most professional singers).

"Rolling in the Deep" is the only song of hers that I like. Partially because it's the only one I've heard where she isn't whining about her ex (sure, it's a breakup song, but it sounds more angry than whiny to me).

I really wish she'd do more songs like that, it has such a catchy rhythm to it and it feels more upbeat almost than her usual sower songs.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I quite like "Rumour Has It". I'm pretty neutral on her music otherwise.

As for her songs being about a breakup, that doesn't bother me, personally, 'cause hell, virtually almost every musical artist in the world, male and female, have written/sung about breakups at some point, and crafted entire albums around that topic.

She has an objectively good voice, but I personally don't like her music. It just isn't my cup of tea, which is funny because I like most things. But soft, flowy ballads like she sings are one of the few things I don't like.

I guess you don't listen to much Joanna Newsom.

Maybe you should be a bit more varied in the female artists you listen to, OP. Branch out a little, there's better out there.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could say I listened to her by choice. I don't. She's just fucking everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just find it funny how Taylor Swift gets so much shit for all her songs being about relationships/break-ups, but when it's Adele she can do no wrong.

I'm with you though, OP. I'm not that fond of her voice either, and I don't see why everyone loves her so much.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I just get a kick out of how the media makes a big thing out of playing "guess the guy Taylor's singing about" and acts like her doing that is something new or whatever. I'm just like, "So...you guys aren't familiar with the whole thing about a little song called 'You're So Vain', then?"

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think both Taylor Swift and Adele's music sucks.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
"If she was a guy, everyone would be calling her out!"

That's why no one ever called out Taylor Swift for writing songs about her ex-boyfriends!

Oh, wait...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Taylor Swift is the psycho vengeful ex who's planning to egg your car and blow up your house, though. Which everyone agrees is nuts.

Adele is more the ex who stalks your Facebook page and keeps messaging you about getting back together no matter how many times she's been told to get lost. She puts out three albums about how dare her ex be over while she's still obsessed with him, but that's totally romantic you guys!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
There are times I'm so happy I basically live under a rock IRL :) very little media crosses my path that's not something I've specifically chosen to indulge in.

...Yet Adele still makes her way through, from time to time. It always annoys me when anyone, anything is that overhyped. She seems to have a decent enough voice, and I'm prepared to accept she may be fairly talented in other aspects of singing/songwriting, but... I just find all of her songs so boring. I pay no attention to the lyrics, but everything I hear of hers is one big long dreary samey-sounding drone. (And I can love wallowing in a miserable ballad as much as the next person so it's not that I necessarily hate that type of music per se.)

Anyway, OP, you have my sympathies! If you find yourself annoyed by something that's in your face all the time, maybe you can work on some 'tuning out' techniques? (A good book, music on headphones, whatever helps.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of off topic, but I always wonder if the people who are like "OMG! Like getting a root canal!" have ever had a freaking root canal! Maybe back in the dark ages, it actually hurt, but it doesn't anymore people. If anything, it's as boring as any other dental visit where you stare at the damn ceiling as they work in your mouth. If you want to say that Adele's music is boring, this is an apt description. If you're trying to say it's painful, this comparison fails.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever heard of a chap named Justin Timberlake and a song called Cry Me a River?

Or Sam Smith for that matter?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's fine to dislike her music and her singing voice. That's just a matter of personal taste. But you lost me when you started attacking her personally. That was grossly unnecessary. Believe it or not, you can dislike someone without resorting to petty personal attacks. That says more about you than it does her.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not petty, anon:

From this interview ( http://www.vogue.com/865375/adele-one-and-only/ ) with Vogue in 2012:

Onstage at Royal Albert Hall she says, “I know I play the victim on the album,” but “I do give as good as I get.” When I ask what her exes might say are her worst and best qualities, she yelps, “Oh, my God!” And then thinks for a moment. “I love a bit of drama. That’s a bad thing. I can flip really quickly. I am not bipolar, but I go from ‘Oh, my God, I love you’ to ‘Get the fuck out of my house!’ really quickly. And I never sit there and talk about it. I give them the silent treatment."

That is classic narcissist behavior. That's the exact kind of bullshit that abusive, toxic people pull on their partners.

When I repeat the notion that I have heard that it’s going to take a brave man to date her again, she says, “Come on! I’m wifey material! I’m great. No one’s got to be brave. It’s not like, ‘You fuck me over and I’m going to write a record and make you the most hated man in the world.’ I am never writing a breakup record again, by the way. I’m done with being a bitter witch.”

A big fat lie, since 25 is still a breakup album. "Hello" is exactly the kind of hoovering nonsense a narcissist does when they're trying to reel their victim back into the cycle.

One day, I ask about her future. “I am fucking off for four or five years,” she says. “If I am constantly working, my relationships fail. So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don’t know what I’ll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.”

Another big fat lie. She started work on 25 less than a year after that interview. She also blames her relationships failing on her work, rather than on anything she does (like the aforementioned abusive bullshit).

When I mention that the lyrics to songs she wrote when she was still a teenager have such an emotional intelligence and maturity, she says, “I have no idea where it comes from. I don’t read literature. I don’t have a very big capacity for language and words. I’m quite limited when it comes to just chatting. But my head comes alive when I’m writing music, and I start using words and describing emotions I had no idea existed in me.”

Translation: "I don't know how I do it, guys! I'm just that damned gifted, I guess!" Exactly the kind of thing a narcissist would say about themselves.
