Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Assuming I'm home alone) Grab a gun and peek out the side window without turning the house lights on to see who it is. If it was anyone I know, they would have texted me. Likely end up calling 911.

(If hubby's home) Send him to check.

I'm honestly kind of shocked someone on FS would openly admit to having a gun considering this place is generally on the pretty liberal side.

Being liberal doesn't mean you don't believe in owning a gun. I don't own one currently, but could see owning one in the future. I'll just be responsible about storing it and I won't be a dick about how I just HAVE to wear my semi-automatic rifle on my back when I go to Applebee's because of those damn terrorists.

But you'd be missing out on the best part of gun ownership.

The second best being building secret caches in your house for when the government comes to take them all away.

I'm a liberal and I wouldn't be afraid to own a gun, especially since I don't have any kids.

Gun-owning liberal here. Hi.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, this just seems weird to me. Given the gun violence in this country and the racial nature of a lot of it, participating in gun ownership just seems antithetical to basic liberal philosophy.

nayrt

I'm as liberal as it gets and for the most part, I am completely opposed to handguns. But I'm not against responsible, ethical and legal hunting. My dad has hunting rifles and such. As long as they are safely stored I don't have an issue with it. I am only against guns that were designed specifically to kill people.

nayrt and assuming you aren't a troll
There's a reason that gun control isn't popular on either side of the aisle.

Personally I don't own a gun, but I have in the past and might in the future depending on where I live (I think it's a necessity if you live far out in the country where emergency services or animal control may not arrive quickly enough, for example). To me, the right to own a gun is among the many freedoms that should be granted to responsible and law-abiding citizens. Just like anything else people want to own or use or do. To me, banning guns entirely is just as antithetical to my ideals as a liberal as banning dogs or motorcycles or weed or abortions or gay sex.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not a troll. I just think our country has gone way off the rails on guns. And I think we've massively misinterpreted the 2nd amendment where actually the right to guns is tied directly to a militia. It isn't about the free right for everyone to own guns. Most other countries don't have anywhere near as many guns as we do, and guns contribute to and often cause so many of the problems in this country. Guns aren't like any of those other things you mentioned. They are specifically designed to kill, and there is no reason whatsoever that the average person needs one. They don't prevent crime, they cause it. They don't on average protect people. People are more likely to be killed by their own gun than to be able to stop a crime from being perpetrated on them.

That being said, I'm not for getting rid of them entirely. The situation you mentioned of living out in the country is actually one situation where I think owning a gun would be okay. But we need many, many more restrictions on them.

the right to guns is tied directly to a militia

Depends on whose interpretation of the Constitution you read.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm liberal and I do generally support banning guns. I don't think anyone has the RIGHT to own something designed specifically to kill other people.

I make an exception for hunting guns, but support strict background checks/mental evaluations.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
The vast majority of gun owners are law-abiding citizens who never use their guns to harm anyone. I think we need stricter background checks and more mental health laws that require people who are treated for certain things to have that show up on a background check, but I don't think there's a need to ban guns. We just need to keep them out of the hands of the people who DO want to use them to harm others.

I'm guessing you're not from the US then? Because I feel it is a cultural thing to an extent. Look at all the presidential forerunners (and indeed, even Obama), none of them are pro banning guns and many of them aren't even pushing for much stricter regulation (Bernie, surprisingly).

For me, I'm always surprised the highway in Germany isn't littered with GTA style wreckage from their lack of a speed limit (because I suspect that would be the case here), but hey, you know, whatever works for the country!

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I am American. I'm just very against guns. That's actually one of the few things about Bernie that really bothers me, though I mostly agree with him.

I actually think most Democrats are at least for some more gun control, though not as much as I'd like. Obama is certainly currently going to issue an executive order to that affect.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, okay. I know very few Americans who are pro banning all guns and I live in SF. It's okay, we can agree to disagree on this.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
See, when people argue this, I think it's simplifying the issue. A huge portion of liberals would LOVE to ban guns. It's just that the NRA is fucking scary powerful and since it's so divisive, a lot of politicians don't want to make that a front-running issue when it could break their chances. Plus, it's not like we could outlaw guns overnight. Better gun control would be required first - and even reasonable gun control suggestions make Republicans go batshit crazy, and they control Congress right now.

It isn't that no one in America wants guns to be banned or strict gun control measures enforced. It's that there's huge and powerful opposition with a lot of money and political offices.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not arguing that no one wants guns banned, just that it's not going to happen in the foreseeable future as no one has it as a platform and none of the main candidates are for it. /shrugs You should remember that it's possible to be a Democrat and still own guns and that the other issues which the party matches on are pretty unrelated.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks ever so much for proving that for many liberals, "reasonable gun control" is only a first step to outlawing gun ownership altogether.

Re: It's four am and you hear knocking at the door

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
How did I prove anything? It's common sense. Just like when conservatives limit abortions, they are really aiming to outlaw it completely.

At any rate, reasonable gun control should be something EVERYONE agrees on, whether they want to go further with it or not.

German anon:
The completely speedlimit-less highway is a bit of a myth. It's true that there are parts without speed limits (and it's usually the straighter parts with high visibility, so the speed you travel by isn't that dangerous.100-110 mph don't seems that fast, and there aren't actually that many people who go over 120)
But huge parts have a lot of speed limits that are changing every few hundred meters . The amount of different speed limit signs is ridiculous in some places.

Well, "openly" in that I'm anon? At any rate, I obviously see nothing at all wrong with it. When someone knocks on your door at 4 am and you're home alone, you might want one too.

You don't think grabbing a gun is an overreaction? Because it is.

No, shooting someone that is not actively trying to harm me is an overreaction. Having a weapon at the ready is caution. There's a huge difference.

Where do you live that is so dangerous that the probability of someone knocking on your door is bad enough to need a gun when you answer it? You are paranoid there.
