This is what I woke up to at 8AM and I actually didn't believe it until I'd googled a news source. He's actually had liver cancer for the last 18 months, but they were keeping it private so it came as a bit of a shock to all the fans.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd googled it but hoped maybe it was a rumor so I came here to confirm since ........ actually I don't even know.

It's ok, I didn't believe it at first either. And then I cried.

I'm trying not to. Today's not a good day for me. I really loved him, as much as you can love somebody you've never met.

I'm sorry you're having a bad day. It's ok to cry though. That always makes things better.

Yeah, I missed out on a lot of his music (though I've been trying to catch up), but The Labyrinth shaped most of my adolescence. I actually have large chunks of it memorized and in my teen years I idolized both Bowie and the character he played. A lot of people laugh that movie off, but it's literally my favorite film of all time, and I don't even know how to react right now.

Re: Is it true

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Labyrinth was my favorite in my childhood and thanks to Velvet Goldmine, I found his music when I was a teenager and I loved it and him. He made me feel okay about my sexuality, which I'd always tried to smother.

Yes! Coming out as bisexual was super awkward in high school and David Bowie made me feel so much better about it.

Yeah. It sucks.

He had sex with a 15 year old girl. https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/i-lost-my-virginity-to-david-bowie

1) she claimed she was older and she had a fake ID, so he had no way of knowing she was a minor

2) the guy just died, come on

GTFO with your victim blaming.

you're going to have to explain to me who's the victim here

That's because you're stupid. The girl is the victim. DUH.

And that is a horrible thing that adult men should not do, but

- If the anon above is right and she lied about her age (I did not find that in my skimming of the article so I am not sure) I don't know what you want him to have done about that?

- She is an adult now and she, and only she gets to define that experience, and as of right now she's defining it as a good thing that she does not regret

-That doesn't erase any of the good things he did or the good impacts he had on people's lives. To paraphrase Pratchett and Gaimen, People are neither fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, just fundamentally people

- As anon above me said, guy just died! Regardless of the more sordid parts of his past, people get to mourn his passing and the loss of what he meant to them. David Bowie is dead and can no longer be confronted with his actions. You, on the other hand, are alive and could probably have held that information back for like, at least a day.

He raped a 15 year old girl. You're right in that she doesn't see it that way, but it doesn't change what he did or make it right. "She told me she was 18!" is a shitty defense that blames the victim and absolves the rapist of responsibility for their own actions.

And it's exactly BECAUSE he died that I'm posting this. People should know the truth about their favorite celebrity, and I'm so sick of this trend of when a celeb dies everyone starts talking about how wonderful they are and elevate them to godlike status. It's disgusting how far people go to defend their celebs, dismiss their crimes, and ignore their victims- and that's when the celebs ALIVE. It only gets worse when the celebrity dies. I'm just doing my little part to fight against that.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
If she gives him every reason to think that she's of age, then it is absolutely not his fault for not demanding to see her birth certificate.

It's because you're an asshole that you're posting this now. If you wanted people to know the truth about their celebrity, you would devote your time to tearing down the bad people while they're alive and could potentially prey on victims. The only reason you're posting this shit now is because emotions are running high and you can get an easy thrill out of upsetting grieving fans who are mourning the loss of an entertainer.

So fuck you.

On the one hand I'm pretty sure you're trolling and on the other hand these are valid points that completely rational people bring up so I'm gonna respond and then I'm gonna flounce, k?

I absolutely agree that adults have no business sleeping with teenagers. I'm only in my early twenties myself, but the idea of sleeping with a teenager makes me shudder, and not in a pleasant way.

But David Bowie, weird and alien as he liked to act, was not a mind reader. If she said she was older, he had no reason not to believe her. (And he was in his twenties until 1977, so sleeping with someone he believed to be around 18 would be slightly less skeevy than it would be if he'd done it last year at age 68)

And, while we're on the subject, you realize that 'deciding for rape victims that they don't know what happened to them and don't have the right to define it for themselves' is a really shitty way to handle rape, right?

I don't see anyone in this thread elevating him to godlike status. In fact, I don't see anyone discussing him as a person at all, just his music, his movies, and the fact that he helped them come to terms with their sexuality. Robin Williams did shitty stuff too, that people were well aware of before his death. People were still sad when he died because the other things he did had just as big an impact.

And let's say that he knew she was fifteen and knowingly had sex with her. You're not fighting rapists by bringing up a dead man's 40-year-old sins. Bowie is not around to learn his lesson and I have older relatives younger tan his crime. You're just being an asshole.

Flouncing now.

"David Bowie raped a 15 year old girl" "YOU'RE SUCH AN ASSHOLE!"

I'm not 'deciding' for Lori Maddox at all. I don't have to. She was 15 at the time and incapable of informed consent. Her "reputation" as a "legendary groupie" means nothing. David Bowie had sex with her and she was 15. It was his responsibility to ascertain her true age. So if she said she was 18 and he believed her, that makes him irresponsible. If he knew she was 15, that makes him reprehensible. Either way, he's a rapist.

Fuck you, you waste of skin.

The world is not black and white, and you are a shitty individual for using someone's death as an excuse to shit on them while packaging it as rape awareness. You don't get to slam something while ignoring the details that don't fit in with your narrative.

While her parents should have done a better job keeping track of their daughter, she herself does not consider what happened between her and Bowie to be rape. Take your phony concern and try paying attention to ongoing tragic cases closer to where you are, happening now and not 40 years ago. But I guess with all the hours you fill looking for dead people to shit on, you could be bothered to do something like that, could you?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I work in a fucking women's shelter you utter piece of shit. There's a lot of David Bowies out there, just none of them are as famous. David Bowie is a rapist. Plain and simple. It's an irredeemable act, regardless of what Lori Maddox might think she felt when she was 15 and impressionable.

But "it's only rock and roll," right?

FYI, that was sort of her goal at the time, and she does not regret it. Actually she describes it in rather glowing, enviable terms.
