I feel a bit bad about it, but I actually agree. Just on a personal level-- when the first series came out, I gravitated to Mako/Haru, and a couple of girls I'd met through the fandom gravitated to Rin/Haru, and they flat out called me an idiot over it. I got some really nasty shit flung at me (when I never criticized Rin/Haru at them, just said it wasn't my cup of tea), so I cut them out entirely. So the second season definitely gave me the warm fuzzies, not the least of which coming from a place of smug satisfaction. It's not nice of me, but...well, I never said/did anything about it, so I'll allow myself the indulgence.

yeah as someone who had some fandom friends who turned...really nasty over this stupid show? i agree with the secret too. normally i feel really bad about gloating over a perceived 'victory', especially because with a show like this you'd never get any true resolution one way or the other anyway? but the few rinharu fans i've met are just....woooooowwww, and i don't even really ship makoharu all that heavily, i just think they're cute. it's like for some reason this fandom brought out the absolute worst in shippers. i'm sure the makoharu side has done some gross stuff too, but tbh most of the real nasty shit i see comes from rinharu fans, which seemed to come from this intense sense of smugness, they thought they were gonna be the one true otp.

having the movie flop? this is terrible, but i hope it kills any chance of a 'future' movie. not the least because i feel like any plot that gets everyone together post-college is going to be ridiculously ham-fisted, but because i don't want to give them the satisfaction after how awful i've noticed they can be.

See, I had the exact different impression (and I ship neither of those pairings). The Mako/Haru side that I've seen has been obnoxiously smug about how their ship is the canon one (especially after season 1) and just wouldn't stop rubbing it in the Rin/Haru shippers' faces (complete with passive aggressive ship tag "invasions") which made the Rin/Haru side preemptively defensive.

Depending on which side you lean more towards, the other side is nastier.

Just recently RinHaru shippers send a thank you package to Kyoani and were thanked by them publicly (they took a picture of their package and posted it). Then the MakoHaru fans complained and harassed kyoani for showing favoritism because their similar package was never publicly acknowledged.

This made kyoani take down the thank you, which sucks because it's the first time they acknowledged international fans.

Honestly that's probably for the best. I think themed slash "thank you packages" and stuff are extremely cringey at best. I certainly don't want international fandom recognized because of stuff like that, and both the MH and the RH sides have done plenty of really cringey, second-hand embarrassment worthy "ship" themed things that they inevitably tried to get KyoAni to notice.

Although as someone who wasn't involved in ship wars (just gimme Reigisa and I'm good) I think both sides are pretty nasty and neither one has a huge moral high ground, but perhaps hanging out on the Free! anon meme for the short time that I did put a sour taste in my mouth regarding RinHaru shippers because some of them got truly intolerable on the anon meme.

I think slashy/pairing themed things sent to creators are cringey when it's not encouraged by canon. But in this case? Considering they were actively baiting fujoshi and encouraging/supporting hints for several slash ships with their show (and anyone saying something different is willfully obtuse at best), I don't think they minded a lot.
