I know nothing about this pairing or the show at all, but I agree with you about Rival ships being way more popular than Friend ships for reasons that I don't really understand.

I always shipped Harry with Ron, not Draco, basically. Excepting some fandoms (Sherlock/Watson is thankfully more popular than Sherlock/Moriarity), it really does feel like the juggernaut ships are Rival ships.

I too can't comment on the pairing/show in question, but same here with this sentiment. I much prefer ships where the people are friends instead of rivals. More power to those who ship rivals, of course, and I get why they appeal to some people. I just like the connection that's formed between friends, and how that transitions into romance if the people involved go that way.

In some ways it seems to be a no-win situation either way for some people (and I'm speaking in general terms here). If friends get together in canon or are shipped by fans, people are like, "Can't we just let friends be friends?"

And yet if people ship rivals, or if rivals get together in canon, people will complain about how annoying it is that writers mistake bickering and fighting for sexual tension, and especially if the rivalry involves violence, people will be upset about that, too, 'cause it's abusive and so on and so forth. It can be a bit confusing sometimes.
