I really love pixel art. It was the first type of digital art I got into, back in the days when I had only MSPaint to work with.

That's why I find so many of these new games so fucking ugly. They're banking on nostalgia and 'it looks just like it came off the NES', rather than putting any effort into making the game look GOOD. But the thing is those games they're half-assedly emulating DID put effort in, the game devs in ye olden days did their best with the color palettes and sprite limitations of the systems. And in contrast the modern attempts at it look like shit and fails at actually capturing that nostalgia.

Old games looked like Ultima II, not Undertale.

Man, early Ultima was primitive as hell wasn't it? I don't think pixel art as we know it started becoming a thing until at least the mid 1980s.
