This whole thing is a pretty great demonstration of why statutory rape shouldn't be called rape.

So you want to make it legal for grown adults to fuck children and teenagers who aren't capable of giving consent?

No. I want there to be a greater separation between the concepts of personal and legal consent. Someone can personally consent to something while legally being unable to.

Basically, I think there's a difference between purposely overriding someone's "no," or incapacitating someone in order to have sex with them, and legally being unable to accept someone's "yes." I don't think they should be called the same thing.

Teenagers are not capable of giving informed, personal consent. Teenage brains lack the capacity for it. It's no different from a drunk person giving consent to sex.

Let the sandman give you a drink.

You keep saying this. Please explain how this means that a teenager can't use their poor judgement to lie their way into the sack with a rock star.

They will probably say it's still rape, because not knowing you're sleeping with a teenager doesn't change the fact that you're sleeping with a teenager. They'll probably also say it's the responsibility of the person being lied to to make sure they're not being lied to.

Because in addition to everything else, you also aren't accountable for your actions until you turn 18.

Teenage brains don't lack the capacity for consent. Teenagers have poorer impulse control and decision-making skills (but so do people in their early 20s. Really, you should be arguing the age of consent should be raised to 25 if you're stuck on this point). That's why we have a legal age of consent, because a teenager is less likely to make a good, informed decision than an adult. But "less likely" to make good, informed decisions doesn't mean "completely incapable" of making good, informed decisions.

A person who's been drugged? Completely incapable. A person who's drunk to the point of immobility? Completely incapable.

It's no different from a drunk person giving consent to sex.

This is an incredibly silly argument. By this rationale a teenager can't consent to sex with another teenager.

I find it so weird that you think a 15 year old is the same as a 7 year old. You must be very stupid and come from a stupid family.

NEITHER ARE CAPABLE OF CONSENT

Take some melatonin and find a good pillow.

And preferably over your mouth.

Hey now, murder is wrong.

Animals aren't capable of giving consent, either. I guess that means teenagers are the same thing as cats, and having sex with a cat is the same thing as having sex with a teenager.

NEITHER CATS NOR DOGS ARE POTATOES. THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY PENCILS.

I knew my mind at 15. Sure, I was immature, but if I wanted something and thought it through, I could consent to that. If I didn’t, I didn't.

Teenagers are not hapless ninnies.

Sorry, anon, the law says they're helpless ninnies until they're 18, so that's what they are.
