(Anonymous) 2016-01-12 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)I always read Free! as a show which on the surface of it was designed to sell shitty merchandise to grateful fujyoshi, but underneath, since it had to have an actual theme for them to work with, seemed to have a lot to say about mental health stuff. Nagisa, one of my favourites, never struck me as neurotypical. I felt like his one-episode freakout was - admittedly in a quite neat and glossed-over way - something which had been coming for a long time. A lack of compatibility between himself and the way he's expected to function. I think that, whether consciously or not, he was written with a lot of ADHD traits, and I'm really glad there was an episode where Having To Function bit him in the ass.
