Is childhood friends being popular ship rare? SouRin is pretty popular.

Then in haikyuu IwaOi, TsukiYama, and KuroKen are popular childhood friends ships as well.

In most fandoms I've encountered, when it comes to slash the rival ship fans will usually outnumber the BFF ship fans by a lot. And in fandoms where the best friend ship is the most popular, it's usually one that's fraught with issues (for example Steve/Bucky, which had very little fanbase after the first movie but became a juggernaut after the second once we got super angst). For a healthy, stable, and relatively drama free best friend slash ship to be the most popular is pretty uncommon.

Another good example is how unpopular a ship Harry Potter/Ron Weasley is, despite it being debatably Harry's most significant relationship in the books period.

I'm not familiar with Haikyuu though.

IwaOi and TsukiYama aren't as popular as KageHina or KuroTsuki from what I understand. Personally, I'd go AsaNoya but that's just me.
