I'm with you on how I do ships and about there being a lot in this fandom that I'm not into. Have people acted judgey to you about it or is it just a gut feeling? I never got the sense that I was being judged for just ignoring the ships I don't care for, so as long as you don't talk about your dislike for a ship I think you're fine?

(What I am worried about is that eventually someone will notice I don't ship KiyoYachi and judge me for that, because in some of my other fandoms not shipping the one possible femslash ship means you're a misogynist. But you ship it so you're probably fine there too...)

OP

Yeah, I've been judged on it before, in one of those surprisingly "wtf?" kind of ways. I had just mentioned in a fandom space that I feel uncomfortable with all the random explicit art of non-OTPs that people post and so when I search tumblr I usually do it by OTP tags, and that got some serious "oommgggg ur such a BABY wtf it's just fiction IGNORE IT" type of stuff, when in reality that's...exactly what I was doing? Like I don't go on other people's tags and be like "I HATE [insert couple here]", I'm not trolley like that at all. I just filter my results so I have the least likely chance to look at explicit stuff I don't wanna see because it's MY fandom experience and MY tumblr.

Some people just get really weird if you're an OTP shipper though. :/

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like like they assumed you were judging them for not caring about OTPs and got defensive. Lots of people act like if you say "This is how I prefer to fandom" it means "Everyone who prefers to fandom differently from me is WRONG." They're the childish ones.

This is likely a difference with how people perceive posts on tumblr. For you, you're complaining in a private space. For other people, you're getting up on the village soapbox to shout. Part and parcel of the medium unfortunately... though I'm so thankful for the ability to f-lock posts now.

Not OP, but in haikyuu fandom there is this predominant attitude that EVERYONE ships every character in every possible ship available.

So the people who have very defined ships are kind of ostracized from the party or met with confusion.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Another thing is that it's not uncommon for fics labeled as one ship to suddenly turn into another popular or crack ship for one character or even several.

I have found more cheating or sleeping around with mutiple characters fics in this fandom than I have in any other

Huh. Can't say I understand, as I generally am good with separating romantic stuff with sexual stuff. If it's just about getting off, I can read porn of pretty much any pairing ever as long as it hits my kinks (except for my biggest notps, funnily enough. It's a good litmus test for me for a particular pairing, when I can't even read porn of it), but I'm not gonna read 50k fics of their getting together.

I guess you're kinda like a demisexual then, only towards OTP investment, OP. :p

And if that's the case, I'm asexual towards my OTP investment. Well, for Haikyuu!!, anyway. For some reason I don't really care for my ships having sex with each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
DA- This is so true that there are some pairings you really like together but reading smut for them is a huge turn off.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes feel this way about live action fandoms because there are some fandoms that emphasize the fun of multishipping and so on. Usually, I only gravitate to fandom because I like one particular ship and I want to search it out, so it's not the way I do things. I don't think there's anything wrong with either way of "doing" fandom. As long as you're not telling people that the way they're having fun is wrong, I can't see why anybody would mind you having OTPs.

I mentioned this in another reply, but some multishippers seemed to have taken offense to me saying something innocuous in how I filter my tumblr feed. I don't know, it was just really weird and there were a few people coming at me for it too, that it's 'immature' to OTP ship? :(

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Some people do act like it's immature to ship OTPs. It's kind of weird but I assume it's because shipwars leave such a nasty taste in people's mouths that some people get the idea that you're a shipwar type just because you have an OTP.

Is that sort of shipping so unusual? I've always been that way about shipping (can't say I NEVER multiship, but it doesn't happen often; I'm much more into OTP's, get super invested in two characters being great together and can't see them paired with anyone else. Well, can't or don't want to), and thought a sizable amount of fandom felt the same way. (Not the majority, but... Shipping wars, man. They exist for a reason. A bad one, but still... People are protective of their ships.)

Anyway, I doubt anyone would judge you for only liking certain pairings because of chemistry/dynamic reasons. That's an excellent reason to ship. (It's my main one.)

We have the same ships in Haikyuu!!

This is mostly how I ship as well, I do have cases where I can multiship because I happen to dig various dymanics with the same character, but the vast majority of the time I OTP a pair and can't really break them up.

As to how others do it I think it can depend on the fandom, I've been in some where OTP-ing felt like the norm and others where it seemed like everyone but me was multishipping.

But frankly so long as no one is being a dick to anyone else over how/what they ship I don't care how you go about it. Ship all the people in a pile! Or not, whatever works for you.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm definitely an OTP-only shipper (and luckily for me, I only ship the major pairings for everyone in HQ, so I'm never short of art or fic or merch), and I'm quite vocal about it--and I've never gotten any flack for it? I always thought of it the other way around--like how can you really care about a ship if you're perfectly happy seeing it broken up for some competing ship?? that I don't get--so the idea of someone calling you out for shipping something as an OTP is laughable to me...

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom is weird. Especially haikyuu fandom. They are under the impression that their fandom is the nicest and most tolerant fandom of them all and they are happy there are no ship wars. It's true, there are few ship wars than the usual fandom because every character is already pretty much nicely paired off with their childhood friend or volleyball partner, but there are always those contrarians who hate everything popular just because it's popular or the I SHIP EVERYONE with EVERYONE and so does everyone else in this fandom!!!!111 xD Isn't cool how literally everyone in this fandom ships all possible variations of ships xD xD xD

The people who have only one ship per character seem to be rarer than the multishippers.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I can appreciate lots of different pairings in some fandoms, but in others I just don't want it. As you say, they're pretty well paired up in Haikyuu (and most sports anime really), so seeing people break those little pairs feels kinda weird. Like Kuroo/Tsukishima, a pairing that I can't, for the life of me understand when there is clearly a cute little Kenma for Kuroo and a cute little Yamaguchi for Tsuki.

I get the appeal of variety, but I like my variety to have some sort of something behind it.

RE: KurooTsukki

Lol it makes me laugh how many people on here seem to have a beef with that pairing. I do too. I'm one of the anons who got into a discussion about it the last time a secret was posted (it was something about Kuroo/Tsukki being a glamour pairing and how the secret!OP was irritated that people shipped it and how it was obvious that most of the people shipping it were doing it for really shallow reasons--a sentiment I pretty much agree with), and I'm definitely part of the "I just do not get it" camp. Especially when in the case of Kuroo, like 70% of his canon personality is like "OMG KENMA ISN'T KENMA AMAZING!?" and with Tsukishima and Yamaguchi they're pretty obviously paired off as friends within the canon, not to mention they have some major character development together.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, KuroTsuki has always been weird for me. I find it difficult to ship 1st years with 3rd years in general because they are such mentor figures, and that goes especially for Kuroo to Tsukki.

Not to mention most KuroTsuki art makes Tsukki into this crying and submissive mess. It's like people don't know Tsukki and how immune to flirting he is.

I agree with the sentiment that the characters are already nicely 'paired off' so it just feels awkward to see all these random ships. It is pretty funny following artist of different ships, the ones who ship the 'main' ships can always easily incorporate all the characters, but those ships involving characters from different teams always pretend their best friends don't exist. That is really the part that bothers me most.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
I am so with you there OP. Especially for haikyuu. I hate how everyone is like 'I ship everyone with everyone!!!!11' As if the characters are mix n match toys. I've seen the weirdest combinations of characters.

I agree with your ships and I always like how nicely everyone is paired off into partners that they are usually always with and they suit each other.

I won't tell anyone else what to ship, but the reason I don't follow any HQ blogs on tumblr is because I don't care for this fandoms proclivity for multishipping based purely on aesthetics and not because of actual character interaction.

Is that Cinnamon Macho art? Can I get the original pic without the secret? I

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm casually into Haikyuu but if I have an OTP I don't multiship either OP, it sucks
