This is why the advice to get a job doing something that you love can often be bad advice

I think in OP's case, perhaps they'd be happier off creating anime/manga? I mean, it sounds like they're stuck in marketing or translation which, while involved with the industry, isn't really the industry itself. Also just because it's super hard for foreigners to break in doesn't mean it's impossible! Look at the gaijin who drew for Prince of Tennis or that Brazilian guy (who is albeit part Japanese) who has amazing rainbow-eyed doujins.

ANYWAYS, it feels like OP really enjoyed cakes or baking or whatnot but instead of signing on to be a baker (or even a baking critique), went on to do marketing/health and safety... which is related and important but not really baking.

I think you mean only the *truly* dedicated. The vast majority are living the starving artist lifestyle, regardless of talent/skills, it's just the way the industry functions.

Also stranger things have happened! Some of my favorite manga titles are author/artist collaborations so there is room for authors too.

I'm not saying it'll happen overnight (and not even certain if OP wants it), but they must've worked hard to arrive at their current position so...
