You talk as if before tumblr almost no one posted any original content on their own blog/LJ/whatever and so there were many poor, poor fans who could never participate in fandom.

You talk as if you want to pick a fight.
A *lot* of fans only read fic, or comment on art, or comment on meta. A lot of fans *don't* actually make original content, except to say 'I loved so and so episode!' or 'Omg, did you read this post/tweet/article?!! (link here)'

And there's nothing at all wrong with that. Just like there's nothing wrong with reposting/reblogging/whatever the fuck you want to call it posts on Tumblr.
