What a fucking throwback...this was from Burger King, right?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, Burger King!

I was trying to remember where I'd seen these characters before! Question answered.

Yeah. Wow. Memories.

Not enough pink mohawks.

That's not very diverse.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Two girls, five boys - not diverse. Five of seven white - diverse, for the 90s. I guess including someone with a disability is kind of diverse, since you still don't see it much.

this is a good secret

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-01-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what this is, but it vaguely looks like the art from the team that did Recess.

Recess was a good and actually diverse show, so this secret is throwing me for a loop.

Hey Herp

OMG, The Burger King Kids Club

Well this brings back memories of going to Burger King as a kid. I've still got a sticker-book with these characters somewhere...

Anyone remember the Groupon parody of this?

This makes me think of Wee Pals

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-01-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They had a girl in a wheelchair, for instance, but her role was just to be the girl in the wheelchair. She would never show up unless there was some gag or message relating to wheelchairs, and she had no apparent personality traits besides being matter-of-fact about her wheelchair.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them a lot better than the portrayals and shows that look like http://i.imgur.com/Rf6ztwD.png

Is it just me, or does the black kid look kind of like Kwame from Captain Planet?

(Anyone else remember Captain Planet?)

Yeah you have a point on that. It reminds me a lot of glee with also seemed to think that having all of the minorities was important. And they also never did anything non stereotypical with them.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
And your point is? If creators can't do any better than tokenism, then throw out ALL the minorities and go back to making everyone white, straight, and able-bodied again?

Wow, no twofers

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Way to reinforce male and white as defaults.

2 redheads is just unrealistic, everyone knows redheads can't be near each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I sort of agree.

In real life, you don't have some kind of perfectly diverse group with one of every flavour. People form ethnic cliques, and this is a reality.

I'd prefer it if shows were just reflective of the setting. Typically, shows are unreflective of the setting in the sense that there's an overrepresentation of white guys. But if you have a movie set in some like... Silicon Valley startup, you're completely justified in making it mostly guys, half Asian, and no blacks except the janitor.

Wheels.

Well. That's not ideal, is it?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it is really annoying when people just do stuff like this to try to look diverse and think that's all they have to do

"Oh, we have a boy in a wheelchair named Wheels AND a black kid! WE'RE SO PROGRESSIVE!"

But it's different when people put actual thought and effort into the characters and their backgrounds and personalities

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what bugs me more than anything else about that picture is how the two girls have the exact same face. Okay so none of the faces are hugely different from one another, but they at least slightly tweak the shapes of the mouth, nose, eyebrows or whatever of the boys... How fucking lazy (and mildly creepy) is it for the girls to be completely lacking in that sort of basic individuality?
