Not as much as everything else. The toys make a lot more money than box office + dvds combined. It's crazy:

I wouldn't say they're meaningless, but yes, merchandising is where the huge money is. It's how Lucas made his fortune-- the studio granted him licensing and merchandising rights in lieu of a higher fee for writing/directing. At the time, the studio didn't realize that sort of thing had the potential to be such a money maker... and Lucas ended up with millions.
