I find these really cool too, but only when they're written in a "sincere" non-humanoid/human or monster/human way (with no pretences of normalcy and no expectations of being accepted in mainstream culture), not a progressive-social-justice-y sort of way that I usually see with human/non-humanoid pairings in fanfic.

As someone who hasn't read enough of this stuff to see it, what do you mean by "progressive-social-justice-y sort of way"? Is the author all "obviously everything humans do are inferior"? Preachy porn would definitely brush me up the wrong way, yuck!

No I mean like "me and this monster should live perfectly normal everyday mainstream lives and the fact that he's a monster is a superficial detail" and push in some half-assed metaphors for gay marriage or trans/cis marriage rights, while completely ignoring everything that makes a romance between a human and a non-humanoid interesting and hot (like awareness of taboos, or a fantasy-like atmosphere).

Oh god this reminds me of those godawful "socially aware" Tony/Hulk fics in the Avengers fandom in 2012. Dispenses with every scrap of awesome "human/monster romance" trope, and turns it into the blah-est of the most blah of marriage rights awareness analogies.

For me, I swing between nonhuman x nonhuman and nonhuman x human. Also shapeshifters Hello Animorphs! and other creatures who are able to switch forms are super fun too.

Yay Animorphs! That series had some great example of canon interspecies romances, too (Elfangor/Loren and Aldrea/Dak, and kinda sorta Tobias/Rachel, of course).
