Really curious what you see in him, since his sarcastic irritability seems to be the backbone upon which Rodney McKay is built.

OP
I like that about him. I just don't like how he disrespects others' work or insults people he works with. I think it's funny to a point and after that point, I think it's unprofessional, which is a big nitpick for me in characters.

While I agree, he does have his moments of giving people their due, mostly in the form of actually giving them responsibility.

NotOP: Could you clarify?

I sort of think of Rodney got similar treatment that Stiles gets in fandom, where the unpleasant bits of his character gets ignored or modified slightly. Stiles is a much shittier person on the show. Rodney is more abrasive and annoying. In fic, they're both generally better people.

I liked him as the gigantic ass that he was but good lord if I ever met the guy he would drive me insane. I always felt sorry for Radek tbh, poor guy tried so hard to deal with him. xD

Radek was my favourite. I loved that poor longsuffering bastard so much. Also, he was surprisingly badass in places.

Redek was great and also really, really smart in his own right and I liked the(few) moments where Rodney actually recognised that.

I love Radek, but I'm afraid the line I'll always remember him for is "Well what am I going to put them?! Certainly not FOOD!!" after Lorne tries to get him to trade most of his food supplies for "*really big* baskets" in a game.

I love Rodney. I know he wouldn't treat me special or anything (i'm no scientist), but i rather love his huffy hysteria and snarkiness, because in the end, Rodney figures it out, he's brave, and he's loyal.

He's just socially inept! And on the plus side of his abrasiveness he's forward about what he really thinks.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-18 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
You really can't excuse workplace abuse with social ineptness. If someone ever reported him to HR he could be sued in a heartbeat. Especially when it comes to his sexual harassment of Sam Carter: he's vulnerable to a civil suit. That's not social ineptitude. He knows how to behave. He just chooses not to.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-01-18 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he's got sent to Siberia for that, hasn't he? Also the series don't intend to show him as abusive, so it must be the fault of a writer of wichever ep it happens in. I focus on Sam because I don't remember anything where he's really bad. He made Mako cry, I think, but she still liked him as a boss?

I'm not sure if he's able to be more socially aware he's never shown as such. House from House MD is nice to his patients in one ep when his pain is gone. Rodney, not so much.

I really like Rodney too.

My favorite SGA episode is Grace Under Pressure which is a really good character study.

I love Rodney. I like his sarcasm - sometimes I wish I had his ability to be rudely blunt and not give a damn. I like that his sarcasm and abasiveness isn't all there is to him - we see him vulnerable, see him caring. I like that he gets scared of some of the situations the team faced, because so would I.
