Re: Gender Thread

Anybody else honestly at the point where they're just over the whole gender thing now?

Just gut it from society like the cancer it is. Give everyone a perfect 50/50 blend of testosterone and estrogen, remove all overt genitalia, erase all gendered words from all languages, dress everyone in unisex clothing, and grow babies in test tubes the second we're technologically capable of it. If possible, remove the genes responsible for sex from the genome entirely. Children are taken from random mixtures of DNA and raised by state-licensed parents unrelated to them who've applied for and passed rigorous examinations. Population is capped at whatever is sustainable for that region.

I'd rather live in that society than listen to another fucking person whine about gender politics.

We'd find something else to whine about.

At least that something else might be novel. Fair trade.

It'll be novel for the first week, then go on for years. It's not a trade at all, just more of the same.

It's been going on since the dawn of man for gender politics, so it'd take at least as long for whatever new thing we found to get as old.

I'd still take it.

Or it'll be religion again. Or race. It doesn't make the others go away. But daydream away if that's what you're into.

Knock out the genes that give rise to racial phenotypes and eliminate all religions while we're at it, I guess.

Everyone can be a-gendered and generic caramel for all I give a shit.

TBH that seems pretty unhealthy. I don't think living in a deeply dystopian future would be worth the tradeoff at all.

...Hello, Citizen. It looks like you'd like to join the Imperial Radch.

Yeah, I'm over talking about and thinking about gender. I'm over the way people make it into this huge, essential thing and start attaching all of these stupid fucking traits to it and the pink/blue toys thing and gender roles. Fuck MRAs and PUAs especially.

It's like human beings can't stop asking the same fucking question: "What's the difference between men and women? Are we different species?" Every second week my local newspaper inevitably has at least one article grossly misinterpreting a scientific study on gender. "SCIENCE SAYS: WOMEN CAN'T DRIVE MAPS, MEN EAT STEAK AND BEER HUR HUR DUR."

Fuck human beings and their need to quantify and categorise each other and chop each other up into little bits so we fit more neatly in boxes. We're not different species. Jesus.

True, but the problem is that those physiological differences in learning and development - particularly learning - are for the most part generalities, and your specific child may not follow them at all. In those cases, many parents told that "boys will be X, girls will be Y" a thousand times during pregnancy panic and desperately try to cram them back into the right boxes.

And so it begins.

DA

but even that evidence-based stuff still probably has some social/cultural component to it rather than being purely biological?

i mean, having more physical energy ---> encouraged by parents to be more physically active, it's not as big a deal if they get a scraped knee because boys need to get over it, etc.

slower to learn verbal skills ---> girls are encouraged/socialised to BE more social, our economy is in words and social interactions.

I'm sure it's part biological, but it's not 100% biological
(And not even present for every person who is a boy or a girl - I've known girl who are completely asocial and girls who are constantly sportsing all over the place, and boys who are verbal and witty and fluent and boys who hate any form of exercise.)

It's the biological determinism and generalisation that I take issue with in the way gender is discussed, not the presence of social differences itself.

I hatehatehate being pigeonholed and told what I am or who I am on the basis of something arbitrary that I cannot change. Especially if who I am is said to be inherently weak, inferior and stupid.

The question you have to ask yourself is: if having more physical energy and poorer verbal skills are purely physiological truths, why have they only become a problem recently?

People say we changed school to make it more accommodating to girls, but we haven't, really. Boys were still expected to sit still and pay attention 60 years ago, and they were able to do it then. Suddenly, they aren't.

Why? What actually changed, and where's the actual biology?

I'm not talking about physiological differences. I'm talking about social and cultural things that are clearly bullshit, that are talked about as if they're fact for all people of x gender for all time.
