I don't expect a lot of complexity from Star Wars. And I get that the reasoning behind the First Order is "shit is chaotic, we want order", but they wouldn't break their necks trying for a tiny bit of complexity, imo.

I agree that it wouldn't even be a bad thing of done right, but they really overdid the ham-factor in that scene. It would have been fine as a general military thing, but then they went there and just had to get the black on red emblem.
I did generally like the bad guys. A lot. But they just went this extra step OTT that made me cringe all the way through. (Adding to this: The way people are now once again going "lol, space Nazis, so funny!" makes me cringe as well.)

I would have loved if they drew a little more on the light/dark dichotomy thing.

For example, I liked that they made many of the villians angry in a passionate sort of way - links to the whole "Peace is a lie, there is only passion thing."

OR, also would have loved it if they'd gone the Kreia route. Having the First Order be grey - rejecting both Jedi and Sith, with the objective of destroying the connection with the Force. And establishing order by getting rid of those space wizards that are always running around making a mess.

The latter would have been a bit difficult if they still wanted to keep the light/dark conflict going as a plot point. But there is so much potential.

I had the theory (sorry, rant ahead?) that one of the reasons Ben was so easily seduced to the dark side because - considering his ancestry and the whole "there must be balance in the Force"/"Anakin will bring Balance to the Force" prophecy that's still ghosting around in the background - he was actually supposed to be a new kind of Force sensitive person with both aspects of dark AND light combined/balanced out in one. And getting him instructed in just the ways of the Jedi/the Light actually knocked this balance off kilter. And that's why the whole "I want to be consumed by the Dark now" doesn't really work out for him, either.
I'd love something like that, because I think this literal black and white stuff never is a great concept and there has to be a bit of a development into a more balanced-out kind of philosophy.
And based on that, a different kind of military organisation that is, as you said, more grey. They can still have misguided opinions and use the wrong methods to reach their goal, but it would have been a different base, at least.

YES OMG I LOVE YOUR IDEA. HEADCANON ACCEPTED.

Man, like, I love the black/white Star Wars but I also like the versions of it (like KOTOR) that explore the grey areas a bit more.

This is speculation, but I actually think Luke in the next movie will be more of a grey Jedi, rather than 100% Light.

I do believe that one of the reasons Luke fucked off into exile is at least partly because his feeling of guilt made him super vulnerable to the Dark. It would make sense.
