I feel you SO MUCH. I had this frustration in the Attack on Titan fandom - you have Levi who is short, hella buff, and extremely strong. Whyyyy does he keep getting ukefied? Why can't he top Erwin (giant blond handsome dude)???

I don't know, anon. I don't know.

Hah, since I shipped Levi/Eren I tended to get a more even mix for my AoT fandom days, and I'm actually kind of fond of the "puppydog seme" trope which Eren gets written as a lot, so I didn't feel it was too bad. But that's pretty much the only series/couple (besides maybe Mako/Haru/Haru/Mako which was equally popular) where I didn't feel like the seme/uke dynamics were horribly skewed.

I love Levi/Eren too, mostly I like Levi on top because I think he's the one with more experience but I'm fine with whatever position. There's a artist on pixiv who draw revesible Riren and I believe she's the only one I find, in both Western and Japanese fandom. I don't think I ever find Eruri with Top!Levi, don't know about fic since I don't read most snk fic.

I find that with some ships I really like the tall top/short bottom dynamic when I was younger but now I love it in the opposite way. UKUS from Hetalia is a big one, when I was in highschool I didn't like it when England on top but now I find it so goddamn hot. Which is a tragedy since the proportional difference of fanworks for USUK compare to UKUS is like between a mountain and a molehill.

Ack please still be around anon, do you have a pixiv link to reversible Riren!?! T___T

I'm the one talking with Ketita downthread. Unfortunately the computer I have her page bookmarked is currently broken, and I forgot to follow her. I'll try to find it again.

I don't know if you are still here, anon but I found it! This is the artist's page
http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=4813632
She draws a bunch of reversible Riren, has some nsfw stuff.

Ha, well, I actually also ship Levi/Eren, and I think part of my attraction to them is the fact that they change up the dynamic a fair amount. I've seen quite a bit of Levi topping as well, and I feel like the general OOC of Levi/Eren bothers me a bit less than what Erwin/Levi gets. But I like the *potential* of Erwin/Levi, if that makes sense.

NAYRT
For me it's because a lot of Eruri fanworks are very kinky and their power imbalance is often overexagrated. Erwin is much crueler and Levi is so woobified you think he won't be able to live without Erwin. Of course every ship will have their level of oocness, but Eruri's worst stuff is somehow worse than other ships. Though I don't ship them I find their relationship in the manga really interesting but I stay away from the fandom.

omg, yes! That is exactly what bothers me about Erwin/Levi the way fandom portrays them! I especially hate how Levi's personality is butchered. Levi is... extremely self-controlled in the series, probably one of the most. He's not the type to be all helpless uke.
I've written Erwin/Levi and also Eren/Levi, and I do try to keep the dynamic away from the stuff that annoys me. I also don't really write kink, and I don't like the crazy power imbalance. (the only time I wrote kinky eruri had Levi topping and was exceedingly silly in general, haha).

I've kind of been staying away from the fandom lately too. I just felt like nobody there thinks of the characters the way I do...

I'm the anon who talked with you about SNK before, glad to have another conversation. As someone who mostly enjoy animanga, I can tell you most animanga fandom is very terrible in character interpretation. I think it's because the medium is very tropy in general, especially the more popular manga and anime that make it to the west. SNK is actually one of the better fandom, as it appeals to a wider fanbase. It's why I hardly participate in fandom outside of reblogging some cute art and read doujinshi (For some reason I can only read some fic but when it comes to doujinshi I can read the most ooc fluffiest stuff)

Nice to see you again :))
Hmm, I sort of wonder at that, you know? 'cause I've been in some Western fandoms, and those can get tropey as hell too, just in a different way... but I think anime/manga fandom tends to skew a little younger, which probably affects things.
My previous fandom was FMA which I remember as being pretty great, but I was younger then, so it could be that I was just less discerning in those days.
I haven't gone into tumblr in ages... I've probably lost all my followers by now, haha.
The real shame with SNK fandom is that it's lacking in any big, sweeping alternate timeline fics. I think it's because we STILL don't know wth is going on in that world. There could be some really interesting what-ifs, but nobody's going there :(

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think age is a big factor. I know I was an annoying fanbrat;) FMA was my first fandom, I was an obnoxious Royed shipper with a mary sue who was Ed and Al's adopted sister. Now I'm 22, a lot more aware than I was as a teenager and a lot more stressed out by real life. With classic fandoms the old fans are grown up by now so that subset of fandom is usually better, not always though. I have seen adults acting worse than kids more often than I would want.

I don't want to generalize, but the animanga fandoms I read fic for mostly don't have good au fics. I find some fics with very interesting premise but turns out full of oocness and become general ship fic. With SNK I don't read much fic but yeah it's a shame most au are generic modern day stuff. What do you have in mind? I admit I haven't thought much about it, mostly because I'm shitty at writing.

I've been kicking around an idea for a "the Scouts launch an actually successful mutiny" fic for ages. The idea would basically involve the high death count on missions being a fabrication, while they fake soldiers' deaths and send them to secret training camps or into the Sina underground in order to set up their auxiliary army. Levi uses his connections in order to take over the underground and make it into a branch of the Survey Corps.
Erwin fakes the deaths of clever people who would have been executed by the MPs by sending them out on "fatal missions", and then has them making weapons for him.
Also the mutiny itself would be more along the lines of a communist revolution, rather than the whole thing with Historia.
Basically competence porn and them struggling against all the conspiracies idk.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I would totally read that. Seriously just write that and I'll give you all the kudos possible. I love realistic revolutionary stories, though I understand why the manga went the way it did. The social espect of the manga is very much glossed over. I would very much like to see the undergound being mentioned more, bonus point if you throw in Eren, Mikasa and Armin being somewhat familiar due to being from Shiganshina. I like the theory of a secret underground tunnel system, though the royal family must know and control it I can see some underground people coughLevicough knowing of it's existence.

The alternate timeline I want to see is what if Reiner and Bertholdt succeded in taking Eren. The warrior village is still unknown in the manga but it would be cool to see what people come up with, given all the theory. I would also like to see what the consequences is and how the Survey Corps would rescue him. Also who Ymir really is, etc.
