Yeah, agreed. I think those also make the most compelling romance stories, because you really root for them.
By and large, I think that the solution to drama is just inserting plot. Make them deal with something external that doesn't have to do with their relationship directly, and have them react to that from within their relationship and in light of it. Have this external thing strain the relationship or affect it. I think that every good long romance fic should have two simultaneous plots - the romantic plot, and the plot-plot. And both of them should coexist and carry the story in their own right.
