I just saw the first few, so all I know them is from that sequence where Harry looks in the mirror and sees them

No, they died in their early 20s. They would've been in their early-mid 30s at the time the films started, if they'd survived.

The characters in that generation were cast to match Snape, and Rickman, while he definitely nailed the role, was about 20 years older than the character he was playing.
