That's the one. Joel makes his appearance in Black Blood (book two) and sticks around for the end of Red Dice (book three), when the military base explodes.

Oh, I fully understand that his death served a purpose, and I'm all for sacrifice for the sake of the plot. The characters are, after all, the author's lambs. In the face of reason, however, I still find myself mourning him and the partnership he had with Sita. It's my belief that it was better for her than the glorified relationship she had with Rama/Ray, which she inevitably went back to when she retconned her life.

I liked Rama (from all that we knew about him) but Ray always rubbed me the wrong way. Especially when he "came back".
Except for Seymour in book 5, I've always thought that Joel was the one who would finally help Sita grow up and move on from her past. I was quite disappointed when it didn't happen (with either of the boys). Joel was a much healthier relationship than any of the other men/boys she had been involved with since her husband. I mean, he adapted as well as he could when he was turned into a vampire, whereas Ray whined/bitched/moaned and refused to even attempt to adapt because he was just a whiny bitch in the first book. Sad that he died (since he didn't really deserve it), but at the same time glad that Sita could start moving on....
