IT'S HISTORY TIME MOTHERFUCKERS

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-01-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Before and after the war (if they survived) they were not.

Arguable. America was only "mended" after the South and Northern politicans after Southern votes threw black people under the yet-to-be-invented bus (trolley?). All this "war between brothers" memory is really based on 1880s-90s political rhetoric.

The 1850s were so contentious that people talking about how today's political climate is worse than ever make me want to kick things.

American political history is honestly pretty wild in every period except, like, maybe a few decades of the 20th century. And in even in those periods it's a little bit of a... Whig history kind of thing the way that people talk about it. I mean, at all times those ideas are connected - in one way or another - to specific political ideas and events in a way that's a lot more complicated than people talk about them.

That doesn't make our current politics any better, of course.

Yeah, we don't have congresscritters beating each other up in the Capitol, yet.
