"fandom friends"

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean when you say "fandom friends"?

Friends you only interact with in fandom or doing fandom things?

Friends you met through fandom but talk to about other things?

When does a "fandom friend" become a "regular friend that you talk to online"?

Met through fandom and mostly talk to about fandom things. People I met through fandom but now have met IRL and/or talk to primarily about non-fandom things are just plain friends now.

fandom friend = friends you only talk to about fandom related stuff and dont know that well or wouldnt talk to otherwise

friend = friends you would shoot the shit with about other stuff too, you know each other as people and not only fellow fans

SA

as for fandom friend vs online friend, when youve traded RL mailing addresses or phone numbers and other RL information as opposed to knowing them as a username

Fandom friends to me are ones I met through fandom. I guess I don't have many of them because if we become good enough friends online, I usually end up meeting them in person at some point and it develops into a friendship where we talk about life in general instead of just fandom.

To me "fandom friend" is someone you met through fandom, and it can be a person you speak with strictly about fandom or a person you talk about other things with too.

You COULD drop the 'fandom' from it though. Friends are friends, especially if you spend a lot of time together.

"Fandom friend" to me means someone you only talk to about fandom stuff. Fic, art, meta, etc.

Some for me started out as fandom friends, but became genuine friends. I've known at least two of them for over 10 years.

I've always thought of it as friends you met through fandom and interact with primarily around your fandom, which is also why I say I don't really have fandom friends right now.

But I have a handful of close RL friends and a bunch of online friends, some of whom share some of my fandoms. And while I think of my online friends as writing buddies or gaming buddies, now that I think about it the way I originally met most of them had to do with fandom, at least tangentially. IDEK.

People I met through fandom tend to be people I continue to talk to about fandom even if we meet in rl.

They become a non-fandom friend as soon as we start talking about other shit more than we talk about fandom.
