the thing I miss most about being young is having no responsibilities and the freedom to spend time and money on enjoying life instead of squirrelling away ever penny in terror of the future.

Ah. I never had those things as a youth, so I can't regret losing them to something else. I hope things turn around for you nonny, so that your days may be filled with freedom and adventure once more.

I only had it for a few years but they were the best years of my life by far. Though they were at the expense of settling down, saving money and generally taking care of my long term future. (I wish I'd goddamn known I was going to get sick.)
