Re: Let's talk about MASS EFFECT!!!!!

I need to play Citadel SO FUCKING BAD but I'm still waiting to get some extra money my way so I can pay for it. My partner purchased a trilogy bundle for the PC that was supposed to include ALL of the DLC, but it was missing Citadel, Overlord, Leviathan, Javik...............

A lot of people are on the "reserved" boat for Andromeda, which I completely understand. After the shitfest that was the end to 3, I'd probably be cautions too. I was fortunate enough to not have gotten ME3 on release (actually, I didn't play the series til early 2015), but even the Extended Cut left a lot to be desired. :|

I hated the weird-ass tonal shift from ME1 to ME2, but yes, agreed on all accounts for Omega. It was gritty and grimy and weird and I loved it.

There was a tonal shift between 2 and 3, as well, though. I think what they were trying to do is each game tries to capture the essence of a certain era of sci-fi. The first game was that idealistic 60s/70s sci-fi (in fact I think they outright said as much) but the 2nd game was a lot darker in keeping with the trends of 80s sci-fi. And the third was a love letter to the late 90s through 2010, in the wake of high-budget "epic" sci-fi films like Matrix, Independence Day, Star Wars prequels, et cetera.

Ah, I never knew about that! That makes me appreciate the change from 1 to 2 a bit more. I did notice the tonal shift from 2 to 3, but I chalked that up to going back to the Alliance.

It's possible that's what they were going for, but honestly, I think a lot of it can be chalked up to the fact that they swapped out a big chunk of their writing team between ME1 and ME2, and then swapped another big chunk of their writing team, including their lead, between ME2 and ME3.

You can see it in some of the dropped plot threads and the weirdly skewed character arcs, too, where ideas were scrapped or reshuffled or interpreted incredibly differently by two or three different writers.
