I really like kidfic. I find it super relaxing and read or write as much
as I can find. I also coo over babies whenever I see them while
out shopping or on places like youtube.

But in real life I have no interest in having children. Even family
members saying “you’ll want them one day” annoy me.

The only children I find remotely interesting are fictional or
someone else’s.

Oh hello, fellow childfree kid-ficcer. What an awkward line we walk.

I'm studying to be an educational psychologist and I'm pretty much the same way, OP. Nurturing children is my passion but I really definitely don't want children of my own. I'd much rather focus on other people's kids.

Children are never ending sources of delight and fun when they're not yours and you can hand them back.

*firmly in the love them but dont want ballpark*

I get this to some degree. In the CM fandom, anytime Reid and Henry or Hotch and Jack interact, be it on the show or in fanfic, I absolutely adore those scenes and stories. And at my old job, I'd see some very sweet kids coming in with their parents sometimes. I particularly liked the little kids who'd picked out some present for a parent/sibling for their birthday or Christmas. They were always so proud and excited to do that, 'cause it felt like they were being all big and responsible and everything and it was really adorable :D.

And yet, like you, I have no plans to be a mom anytime soon, if ever. In my case it's mainly more because I don't really have the money or means to properly care for a child right now than anything else, but even if I did, being a mom isn't the biggest priority on my list.

I don't generally seek out kidfic but sometimes a long-running fic or series I start ends up involving kids later on and I'm always surprised by how much I end up enjoying it even though I want nothing to do with taking care of children in real life.

I don't think that's a whole lot different from aro people reading romance.

That seems normal enough. Lots of people are interested in seeing and reading about things they wouldn't want to experience themselves.

And it's a lot different having a kid and dealing with that level of responsibility 24/7 then it is being around them momentarily and being able to 'give them back'. And of course fictional children, you don't have to interact with them at all.

So I understand this. I'm not a massive kidfic fan, but I have read a handful I've enjoyed; I just don't go looking for them.

I'm the same way. I'm pretty picky about which kidfics I like, but I am always excited to find a good one. But kids in real life...Most of them are ok for a while, but I could not deal with them 24/7.

It's not that unusual of a mindset, I know a few teachers who love kids but they don't want them themselves, so I can see that working for fandom/fic too.

Cute photo is cute!

Totally in the same boat.

Though if the cute precocious kid in a fic gets too obnoxious, I will x out.
