Scansion is the property of words scanning, or fitting correctly into a meter or structure.

There once was a man from Japan
Whose limericks never would scan.
When informed it was so,
He replied, "Yes, I know,"
But I always try to fit as many words on the last line as I possibly can."

That reminds me of one of my favorite poems, by Steven Herrick:

There once was a limerick named Steven
whose rhyme scheme was very uneven
it didn't make sense
it wasn't funny
and who'd call a limerick Steven anyway?
