but when I was a teen it felt like there were less series going on

I feel that way too. Maybe I wasn't aware of everything that was available, but I find it just as likely that now more shows are being translated (and sooner); anime did blow up, so it's more common now.

There was a time where when you talked about popular series, there were a handful. Now every 'season' it feels like there's 50 shows.

I get in the mood to watch anime every once in a while

That's me.

"Hey, remember this anime that came out 20 years ago? That was great."

Haha, yea! I'm mostly stuck in that time too. (Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, etc)
