Aha! Very, very interesting.

Is it? Considering most people don't even tag Thor/Loki as incest, I can't say it is.

Not that specifically but you describing it that way is one more piece of evidence that points in a certain direction of a big uncertainty in my mind.

That fandom doesn't follow a set pattern of rules?

Just to clarify, you consider a relationship incestuous only if they're biologically related, right?

For two imaginary Norse Gods turned comic book characters? Yup!

I might regret asking this, but what about real people?

Re: Inspired by #7

It depends doesn't it? It isn't just a cut and dry, "Well, these two are adopted family members therefore any relationship between them is incest!"

How old were they when they met? Maybe two 16 year olds are now siblings because their parents married. (See the movie Lone Star State of Mind for a hilarious version of this)

How close are they? Maybe the father you don't live with adopts somebody who you only meet once a year when you have to visit your dad during your spring break.

What are the power dynamics? An adopted parent should never hook up with their adopted child. There is a huge power imbalance there (I feel the same way about any relationship with power imbalance).

Were you raised together? Maybe you find your adopted cousin hot and you've only ever seen them during the holidays.

So, what is the specific scenario?

You think you're blood related your entire lives until you're adults and your parents finally let it slip that oh yeah, one of you is adopted. And you've always had an unusually close relationship that you kind of wished could be more and now you can't stop thinking about the fact that you don't actually share any DNA after all.

Like, I can't give you a satisfactory answer. For one, this feels like you are trying to make me slip up and admit something shocking.

Secondly, while I think it would be morally wrong, I don't think that is my decision to make. If it isn't a mutual feeling, nothing should happen. If it is, I would hope the two would enter therapy to address the issue and inform their decisions.

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, I have no idea what shocking thing I would try to make you admit.

I think I've gotten as good an answer as I'm going to get and if I keep going and ask more specific questions I'm probably going to eventually hear something I'm not going to like so I think I'm going to stop here.

Thank you.

What answer were you looking for? Like, did you want to know if I think you should have sex with your adopted brother?

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly whether you would consider such a situation to count as incest or not.

Re: Inspired by #7

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-28 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Why? It seems odd to care that much unless you have something invested in the answer.

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I do. My sanity. At least until such a time as I discover the answer for myself.

Re: Inspired by #7

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-28 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope you can come too a satisfying conclusion. And if you ever want actual, serious advice message me (I can keep a secret).

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was being serious, or at least trying to. I just feel like if it's considered incest most people would disapprove but if it isn't then they would be more likely to not care. I don't know. Maybe I'm not explaining it right.

Re: Inspired by #7

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-28 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I really think it depends on the situation and people involved. If you want to discuss more (perhaps with more explanation), feel free to but I won't respond until morning. I got to sleep. :)

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really hard for me to try to make sense of it right now so I think I need to just think about things for awhile but I might ask you some other time if that's okay with you. Thank you for your help. :)

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
are you trying to decide whether or not you should bang your adopted sibling? if so i'd say probably not. even though you aren't biologically related it could still cause a lot of drama.

Re: Inspired by #7

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-28 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what they are doing. If they are using me as the moral compass of whether or not to bang their adopted sibling, I feel honored and a bit weird about it.

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
lmao omg it looks like that actually is what they're doing. what i wonder is why single you out to get advice from out of everyone in this thread.

Re: Inspired by #7

Obviously my knowledge of Captain America fanfic has prepared me for making big moral decisions.

And I guess I am pretty non judgmental. And people sometimes reply to questions to MY reply because I think they see my icon and assume I made the question.

Re: Inspired by #7

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Why do I get the feeling that this isn't actually about whether or not they should have sex with their sibling, but something else entirely? I feel like there's some kind of point they're trying to make, with the cryptic wording and shit, or like you said, something they're trying to get you to admit, but hell if I know what it is.

Re: Inspired by #7

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-01-28 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it felt like they were trying to get me to admit something. Which...for the record I don't have the hots for any of my siblings.
