Twice in the last five years, the top box office movie of the year has been an action movie with a female lead. So the marketing notion that people just won't buy media with women probably should be put to bed.

You'd think and hope so, but the industry can be ridiculously conservative and stubborn about such things, and the myth persists. :(

From other countries, you can also look at for example studio Ghibli, which has plenty of female protagonists and those movies are beloved all over the world.
