For the longest time I only thought white kids could have autism.

The fact that this is just floating out in space instead of being nested in a thread is killing me for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm trying to figure out what thread it would have came from.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I believe you.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not /only/ but autism is a social disorder and white people are more prone to those, so it's quite likely you saw a lot of white people with autism like disorders and made the logical leap.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe white people get diagnosed more because they have the resources to do so.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Bingo.

That might be a joke, but it's actually a huge problem with diagnosing. Non-white kids (and girls of all races in general) with high-functioning autism go undiagnosed much more often, leading to avoidable problems.

The "standard" view of an autistic kid is white, male and physically unfit.

A doctor told me many years ago she thought I had autism. Never was potentially caught in grade school cause I was just another bad black kid probably. :/

Did it just not occur to you? Fair enough, sometimes you just don't think about something until it's pointed out and you're "oh yeah".
