Re: What is pandering done *wrong*?

Commercial radio programming for most of the last 20 years. Somewhere on the dial, The Eagles are playing not because anyone at the station appreciates how The Eagles crafted so many great pop songs, but because those songs have been statistically proven to be least offensive to people over the age of 35 as filler between commercial breaks.

My dad worked as a radio DJ, and I remember him sharing many, MANY rants about how the higher ups and radio consultants decided on what songs should or shouldn't get airplay on stations. He also remembered having to have a lot of "talks" with his bosses because he tried to play something other than the same 200 songs the station had deemed okay to play. I don't know how other radio DJs felt about that whole thing, but I know it drove my dad nuts.

(An infamous one was back when Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling" was popular, but they could only play that song after a certain time of day 'cause it was too "raucous" for some listeners. Not even kidding.

Then there were the higher ups who seemed genuinely shocked at the idea that there were black rock artists or female rock artists. Mmhm.)

At one time, I worked for a community radio station. Now, I just do Pandora and Spotify.
