I think they need to redo that study, to be honest.

There are options with a female protag for people to identify with. It'd be nice if there were more options. There are games I want to pick up like Mirror Edge and Heavenly Sword (I did this one) and then the game play is bad (or rumored to be bad) so I don't want to keep playing or buy it. If the game play is clunky, sickness inducing or just flat out too complicated, no one is going to buy the game after word of mouth no matter what gender the protag is and the gender of the protag shouldn't be considered the cause. The reason they are considered the cause is that it's EASIER to say... "Oh, it was a female protag and men can't identify with them..." while the men are going "your game play sucks and those boobs aren't bouncy enough."

IMO, the huge problem with female characters in both big budget games and big budget films are that they are written as females first and people second. To me, I agree with an anon above, if the character is well written, I don't care what gender or alien or fantasy creature they are. But that means they have to be written as a person with emotions first and then assigned a gender second.

Then, how many people are actually comfortable with the idea of a gun toting female in a FPS, even if it is just pixels. I think it'd be awesome, even though I dislike FPS. Hey, I'd take an action adventurer platformer like Ratchet & Clank with a female protag. Or a Sly with a female protag (or even just continue those stories because good characters!)

In MMOs and RPGs and fighting games, if I have the option, I choose a female character most of the time because I like being a female, but sometimes the male characters are either better or more broken so I'll play those. (My fave RPG is FFX-2, soo, my standards aren't high here.) Now, in MMOs, right now I'm hooked on Star Stable which only allows female player characters. (The story is a bit lacking conflict but I can ride on horses and buy lots of cool gear.)
