I usually have an easier time getting that "this character is me" feeling from white protags than black protags (if it isn't clear, yes, I'm black.) On the other hand, while I relate better to white protagonists or white characters individually, I relate to black oriented media much better. So if you have one similar-to-me white character in a story with a bunch of black characters then I'm good.
However, just in case you're curious, I fucking hated Memphis and Maniac McGee.
