I think for me, personally, it seems that back when I started in the late '90's, fanfiction was a new thing. So fanfic writers got bashed on a whole lot more for "not putting their energy into original work". Even today, fanfic writers are looked down on by those who are published.

Kind of like how "vanity publishing" is losing its insult factor since self-publishing is all over the internet. It used to be if you were vanity published, you weren't published. You had to have a contract with a "proper" publishing house to be a writer.

Some of that old thought process still clings to my psyche since I heard it enough times back in those days. Even today "you're good enough to be published!" still smacks of that prejudice. Yes, people give that as a compliment to fanwriters.

So yes, I do write fanfiction for fun. However, I've had to "justify" my writing fic enough times, I admit it comes out as a rather short "I have no interest in being formally published."
