For years, I somehow managed to not realize that "The Sandlot" takes place in the early 1960s. It wasn't until someone mentioned Bertram's hat is apparently a'60s Angels hat that I realized it. I clearly ignored the whole, "He got really into the '60s and disappeared" line.

I think I thought Benny was called "The Jet" after the Elton John song "Bennie and the Jets" and just assumed it had to be after the song came out. Oops.

Postscript here, as no room: I guess I should have really thought more about what it meant about the ages of the various characters that James Earl Jones's character could have a photo of himself with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, who died in 1941, but it never seemed really relevant to my enjoyment of watching "The Sandlot" as a child!

Was he called The Jet as a kid, or was that after he hit the majors? Which would have been in the 70s sometime. I need to watch this again, clearly!
