I do think there's some kind of amplifying factor. I mean, Welcome to Night Vale had people like this, but I don't remember them being this dedicated to their cause or having this long of an attention span.

Yeah, well, seeing what certain teenage nerds on Tumblr are like—and I mean the so-crazy-you-hope-they're-trolling, weird identity politics nerds—I can see that the show's pure unique weirdness will attract and nourish a lot of madness.

I mean: sexless, feminine-gendered intelligences; a male lead whose heritage derives from his sexless, feminine-gendered mother; the ability to literally lose oneself in a fusion with another being; size-changing kink; and implicit immortality.

OK, that's bait for a wide variety of young people questioning gender idenities and roles on multiple levels; as well as hitting a lot of concepts usually associated with mysticism and theology. It's incredibly mentally warping if you take it too seriously, and the mix of credibility it gets for non-binary and female empowerment means it will be taken too seriously.

But the bullying? Again, I think that comes from somewhere else and is a reaction with elements that have coalesced around online nerd fandom in general and "social justice" fandom in particular, not from this show itself.

Like socially deviant SF has been for ages, it's presumably a natural magnet for social justice & QUILTBAG nerds, but also anyone who just doesn't want to be told by society they're wrong. This could include anything from ephebophiles & pedophiles to self-destructive teenagers, fat acceptance types, kids who don't know they're tone-deaf, and strident fans of [insert despised nerdy thing here].

This is not entirely a new problem. SF subcultures draw weirdoes, and some real creeps.

Any young person coming in has to understand that some of the folks you'll meet in a fandom are broken, some are psycho, and some are just plain wrong.

But as a young person, you may not see that.
