Could try asking them about preferred pronouns? I feel like that's a relatively polite way to get at that particular topic

I was gonna say this. Asking for someone's pronouns is a simple and polite way to clear up confusion.

This is probably the easiest and least awkward way to go about it, if you want to know.

Have nothing else to say other than this cosplay is lovely.

Is it one of those where you're a follower/fan but don't know them well enough to ask? Because that's rough.

I know people make fun of the tumblr putting preferred pronouns front and center on their blog, but it makes it a lot easier.

That cosplayer is Russian, so there is a high probability that even if they are trans (as you imply in your comment), they wouldn't go around advertising it everywhere.
That said, I'm fairly certain they're female. Their Etsy shop is the only place I found with a gender noted, and it says "female" there.

Looks like a woman to me.

The more I see people wring their hands about gender, the farther I go in the direction of thinking gender has lost all meaning and we should just drop and go back to sex and if neither your sex nor the opposite sex fits how you feel about yourself then tough titties. Learn to deal and love yourself regardless.

Thank you. I have been thinking this myself for a while. It's all getting so confusing these days and I blame Tumblr for this the norm.
