Skulduggery Pleasant was so boring and cliche, the only reason I didn't toss it immediately was that I was at camp and didn't have anything else to read.

The Secret of Platform 13 was so heavy-handed and predictable from the beginning that I actually held out hope until about halfway through that it would deliver a plot twist. I just couldn't believe that anyone could write something so typical from start to finish with a straight face.

I also reread Roald Dahl recently and was disappointed. Esio Trot was only accidentally funny, George's Marvelous Medicine was ridiculous (though I'll give it allowance for probably being funny to boys exactly 8 years of age), and Matilda is such a Mary Sue I just couldn't get past the first quarter. Would regret buying the box set if it hadn't come so cheap.

I tried that because I think a blurb on a Cirque Du Freak book was by the author, but I honestly didn't get past them walking in a neighborhood or something?

The Secret of Platform 13 is meant for, like, 10 year olds, so I'm not sure why you would expect it to do anything revolutionary or labyrinthine...

Books for 10 years olds are about the only thing I read, and The Secret of Platform 13 scores pretty lowly amongst them for me. It was the fact that it was trying to build up to being revolutionary that really grated on my nerves.

It's been a while since I read it, but I don't remember anything revolutionary-build-up-ish about it. It was just a straightforward mild kids' fantasy novel that laid nearly all of its cards on the table immediately.

I remember loving The Secret of Platform 13 when I read it as a child, but I honestly don't remember much about it aside from the main character having three aunts, I think?

Also, thanks! That's one that's totally slipped my mind as an adult, so when I get around to it, now I'll remember to add it to my online bookshelf.
