You said everything I feel, much more eloquently than I could.

The fandom I keep tabs on that's the worst for this is "Phantom of the Opera". And that's even easier since the original novel is in the public domain. No need to file off any serial numbers if you don't want.

As a fanwriter, I respect my fans. That means if I ever had to pull a fic, I would give people as much time as possible to download it, and encourage them to share freely after my copy is gone. But that would have to be some pretty extreme circumstances.

Writers who respect their fans when they go original get my money. Those who decide to burn bridges? Not a penny.
