Re: Rec me fantasy?

Well... not all of what I like is considered "classic", if by classic you mean more like Tolkien or Arthurian legend. But here goes:

Gormenghast - Mervyn Peake. Set in a crumbling old castle, with bizarre traditions. Gothic and weird. Not really "magical."

Perdido Street Station, The Scar etc. - China Mieville. This author draws heavily on Lovecraft and Peake, but there's more actual magic in this one. Quite dark.

Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell - Set in the same period as Jane Austen's novels. But with magic! Specifically: faeries. The idea of faeries as a strange "other". Very long. You might find it dry because of the old-fashioned language.

The Edge Chronicles (eg. Midnight over Sanctaphrax) - I love the world that's created in this series of books. YA/Kid's stuff. One of my favourite series when I was younger. Sort of steampunk, lots of weird creatures and interesting blends of magic and technology.

A Wizard of Earthsea - Seafaring wizards! Has a similar "mythological" or fable feel like Tolkien, but IMO, more readable. It's about facing your inner demons.

Seconding the last two. Though the Edge Chronicles have given me a touch of vertigo now and then - they're just that vivid!

Nonny, this may be a late comment, but if you loved Edge Chronicles, I HIGHLY recommend you read Mortal Engines by Phillip Reeve. Still my favourite book from childhood. It was basically my 'Harry Potter.'
