Re: Books you're not "supposed" to love but do

The Catcher In the Rye is the book everyone is supposed to hate reading for school because Holden is an insufferable little shit, but I thought he was hilarious and relatable.

Lots of teens are insufferable little shits, though. That's certainly why I loved the book and related to it (both when I first read it as a teen, and now years on).

...It's the adults who read it and still think Holden is some kind of cool/edgy you have to watch out for.

I hated reading this book in school. I have grown to appreciate it more and more as I have gotten older.

But it is a legitimately amazing book, and Holden's characterization is intentional, not accidental. He's a really realistic teenager. I get that the book is latched on to by the "emo" crowd, which makes everyone else hate it, but it's still a great book.

I related to and feel for Holden. It helps that I didn't read it for school and I'm at the transition between teenager and adult. I understand his hatred for growing up and how isolated he feel. I also like the character exploration type of book so it helps.
