You know, one of my favorite fan authors (a BNF in various fandoms) told everyone (oh, this was about a year ago?) that they were writing original fiction and seeking to publish, and when a few of their fans asked them if they were going to take everything down, they responded with, "Nah, I would never do that to you guys."

Another popular author recently deleted all her works, but y'know what? She gave everyone ample time to save everything--even compiled most of her fics into a PDF!--and plainly said that she encouraged private sharing. Her announcement post said something along the lines of, "I hate to do this to everyone, but..."

I'm a writer myself, and while I'm nowhere near BNF status, I have a pretty sizeable following. At this time in my life I would never consider pulling my works from the web, but if I decide to publish in the future and my editor/publicist requests that I do so, I would not prevent my fans from privately sharing them. To me, that seems cruel.

So no, readers are not the only ones who feel this way. Many, many authors do, as well. I guess it depends on the type of author you are and whether you feel like you're contributing to/expanding the fandom or you're just posting your work for the heck of it.

I personally feel like I'm contributing to the fandom/the community, but then, fandom has always been pretty important to me. Taking my work down is one thing, but preventing private sharing, I feel, is another thing entirely.

Just my two cents.

As a writer, I wouldn't delete my fics without a heads up to fandom. I wouldn't delete them at all unless I had little choice. But I also don't have a quarrel with authors who do. It's their work, they get to decide what to do with their work.
