Could it be the type of characters you like attract a certain type of fans? Not that that makes it wrong, but it's a possible explanation.

I've been in a fair amount of fandoms where my pairing had a disappointing following (because, like you said, either there's so much wank, or the fic is atrociously OOC, etc) so while this isn't always my fate, I sympathize. Sometimes it's almost better to just enjoy the material yourself, or try to find a few fans who feel the same way you do and squee with them about it.

Sorry to hear that, anon. I feel you as it seemed like no matter what I shipped, I always got the ship everyone backlashed against. Rare pair, popular, whatever. It was super annoying to have to deal with.

The actual fans were nice, but the anti-fans were a pain in the ass.
