Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2016-01-31 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I didn't feel like the only person whose reaction to the new stuff is:

"JKR stop saying things."

"JKR stop writing things."

"I'm worried that the new stuff will debunk my totally canon Aragog/Dobby NC-17 noncon fic."

"Oh my god who cares about Harry Potter, it died like years ago HEY THERE'S A NEW STAR WARS MOVIE."

There's some things I'm less excited about than others, and I'll admit even I feel some tidbits didn't make sense. But I still like canon.

I'm with you on that, OP. JKR STOP IT.

She should have stuck with her first instincts and let it end there. She'll only destroy her own world at this rate.

AYRT - Actually, I was trying to make the opposite point, but a typo kind of ruined it...

Ah well, guess I fall in the opposite camp then. I'm glad you're enjoying the new stuff though, OP. (Unless your point was that you just don't care - in which case... Yay Star Wars? !)

I think everything OP wrote in quotes are examples of how other people in the fandom feel about JKR's continued tidbits about the universe, whereas OP doesn't always love all of the new stuff she puts out, but they still enjoy the universe enough that they love seeing stuff from her.

So Star Wars was an example of someone who's happy to let HP fandom fall by the wayside & revel in the resurgence of the Star Wars fandom.

AYRT - Yes! Exactly.

Although the Star Wars was more how people will roll their eyes at anyone who mentions Harry Potter because it's so old and who cares, or at JKR for still wanting to explore her universe, but at the same time no one's batting an eye at Star Wars. (Although admittedly George Lucas wasn't involved in the latest films, but still.) The ship one was the hypocrisy of people who don't write anything remotely canon, but don't want more canon because their fanfics might be ruined.

I can see how those continued expressions would grate, especially given how hypocritical the first is & how nonsensical the second is. Sorry, OP. Though you'll find people who agree with you around these parts, like nanslice.

The reaction to JKR's new stuff seems pretty mixed across the board, at least on F!S.

SA - correction

*Whose reaction ISN'T.

Yeah, I think she should continue writing in her canon if she wants. It's hers.

AYRT - Exactly. You don't have to like all of it, as I said there's one or two things I don't, but there's also things I'm excited about; most of all, I respect her right to keep talking about it.

It's her canon and she certainly can keep writing in it, but I have to admit I do understand the somewhat irrational response that OP has that she would stop. I had the same reaction to George Lucas' endless tinkering, and his statements that his changes were canonical. Of course he CAN - but he couldn't ever make me like any of it.

I'm sort of meh towards the fact we keep getting all this info through word of god. On the one hand, I love worldbuilding, but on the other, I'd rather have gotten all this info in the books than having to find it out nearly a decade after the series ended.

You're not alone. It might be a minority opinion FS when secrets like this come up but I roll my eyes every time there's a new "update" on Harry Potter because it seems like a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

Eh. I don't follow her twitter. Canon for me = books. AND..that's about it. And by books I mean, Series 1-8. I hear through websites the cute updates she makes and what not, but I don't take those things into consideration* when writing fic. OR reading it for that matter. The universe and its characters are her creations , she can do as she pleases. And I can do as I wish and carry on. Until she writes a new book, or something to that extent, it's not outright-I-have-to-pay-attention canon for me.

*If she makes a reveal about a dead character, I may take it into consideration if it provides an explanation for certain character attributes. & even then, if it's fic I do as I please.

I'm with you on just about everything up there. I like to pretend that she doesn't exist. There is no twitter, there was no author. Just Harry Potter the series, as imperfect as they are. It hurts less that way.

Your Aragog/Dobby fic thing made my day.
